Proposed research directions
Between an Idea and an Object
How can simple interfaces help people create clothing without first mastering pattern construction or knitting-machine programming?
Observation
I began with pattern making and knitwear production, then moved into 3D and generated imagery. At each stage, I encountered the same gap: imagining a form or pattern is easier than explaining to a production machine how to realise it in material.
I am interested in computation as a mediator between creative intention and physical fabrication: a tool that supports the technical calculations and translations while people develop and refine their own creative ideas.
Two directions, one question
From Body to Pattern explores editable garment patterns and the assumptions behind fit. From Idea to Machine-Knit Garment explores the translation from visual motifs to knitted material. Both aim to make specialist production knowledge usable through simple interfaces, with small physical experiments as a first step towards broader open tools.
Why Future Sketches
Future Sketches is my first-choice group: its emphasis on software as an expressive medium, experimental tools and pedagogy connects directly to my work between fabrication and teaching. I want to develop small interactive studies whose outputs can be examined as physical samples.
Fluid Interfaces is a secondary interest for human–AI interaction and creative control. Tangible Media is a more specific possible connection if a project centres on people co-creating through a physical interface. These are distinct research directions, not interchangeable homes for a garment-production tool.
These studies are proposals. My existing evidence is in the collections, production work and teaching cases; I have not yet built or evaluated the proposed interfaces.
From Body to Pattern
From body proportions to garment form and a pattern that can be made.
From Idea to Machine-Knit Garment
An accessible workflow from a sketch or generated motif to yarn and stitch selection, digital previews and machine-specific knitting instructions.
